There are different methods in making a compost pile. One way is to rake the materials into a pile leaving it in the open. Another way is to place the pile in a compost bin. Anything that was once living can be decomposed. The compost pile should be made in a way to allow decomposition to happen guickly.

Your compost pile should be on the ground so worms and other organisms from the soil can enter the pile. You can also place your compost pile next to the garden. If you prefer to use a compost bin there are many ready-made types you can buy.

When picking a site, choose one thatis on level ground. An area with shade will keep the pile from drying. It should be near a water source since water is needed ot keep the pile moist.

The smaller the pieces, the faster the decomposition process will be. One way to shred the materials is to run your laun mower over it. Leaves in particular should be shredded. The material should not be smaller then 1/2 to one inch. As long as there is a mixture of fine and corse materials there won't be a need for so much shredding.

Make a compost pile by building in layers. Layers make it easier to keep track of the materials and the C/N ratio. The layers do not need to be placed in any particular order since it will be mixed in the turning process.

Add water to compost if it is mostly dry. It should be moist like a squeezed sponge. It is difficult to judge this correctly with out experience. Turning the pile helps you to judge the moisture content, and make changes as necessary.
