Maua is a native canopy tree that grows from 10 to 30 feet tall. The young stems are red with alternating simple leaves that measure 1-4 inches long. The leaves are usually a bright green or sometimes yellow green or red. The middle vein of the leaf is bright or dark red. Flowers look like a burst of coral polyps and are very light yellow in color. The maua prefers partial to full sun and can withstand the wind if placed in open locations while a young seedling. On the island of Maui the Maua is sometimes referred to as a'e. The traditional use of the wood was for making boards. |
