The Snake Plant is endemic to Hawai'i., however it doesn't have a Hawai'ian name. The leaves of the snake plant are talland they can grow up to 4 feet tall. Different types have different patterns. This one has a green center and a yellow border. The snake plant can survive in xeriscape conditions and is also wind and salt tolerant. This plant is a ground cover but it can spread like a weed and is listed as invasive species. It is an unusual ground cover because most ground covers are low to the ground but this one of the tallest. The snake plant had various ancient uses but none were found to be specific to ancient Polynesians. However other cultures used the fiber of the strong leaves called bow string hemp. It was used for making bracelets, anklets, and necklaces. The fibers were also strong enough to make rope. It was also known to have medicinal uses. | |||||||
